Autumn Grove and Snowy Peaks II

Autumn Grove and Snowy Peaks II
Original 72" x 30" x 0.75" painting
Golden, Liquitex, and Chroma acrylics on gallery-wrapped canvas

This is the newest edition of the Autumn Grove and Snowy Peaks composition. This painting sold fairly quickly on one of my sales venues, and was fun to paint, so I decided to paint another. Autumn is my favorite season of the year, and my favorite to paint as well.

Springtime Daisies Commission

Springtime Daisies (Commission)
Original 30" x 40" x 0.75" painting
Golden, Liquitex, and Chroma acrylics on gallery-wrapped canvas

My patron requested a large edition of my Springtime Daisies composition. She has bought several of my paintings, and I was quite happy to add another one to her collection.

Quote of the Day
"When you say, I enjoy doing this or that, it is really a misperception. It makes it appear that the joy comes from what you do, but that is not the case. Joy does not come from what you do, it flows into what you do and thus into this world from deep within you. The misperception that joy comes from what you do is normal, and it is also dangerous, because it creates the belief that joy is something that can be derived from something else, such as an activity or thing. You then look to the world to bring you joy, happiness. But it cannot do that. This is why many people live in constant frustration. The world is not giving them what they think they need." --Eckhart Tolle

Autumn Path XXV

Autumn Path XXV
Original 24" x 36" x 0.75" painting
Golden, Liquitex, and Chroma acrylics on gallery-wrapped canvas

Today's painting is the latest in my popular Autumn Path series. This line is one of my signature compositions, and has a big following among my patrons.

I spent part of my morning on Monday rounding up a little of feral kittens that live under the house next door for spay and neuter. Ferals often have a short and brutal life in the elements and trying to find adequate food. A reminder to all: please spay and neuter your pets!

Quote of the Day
"Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around." --Leo Buscaglia

My patron contacted me to paint a commission of her, her husband, and their three Borzoi from photos she provided. This was a fun and challenging portrait to paint! I'm pleased to report that she was very happy with the composition.

Quote of the Day
"What is needed, rather than running away or controlling or suppressing or any other resistance, is understanding fear; that means, watch it, learn about it, come directly into contact with it. We are to learn about fear, not how to escape from it." --J. Krishnamurti

Quote of the Day
"If a culture treats a particular illness with compassion and enlightened understanding, then sickness can be seen as a challenge, as a healing crisis and opportunity. Being sick is then not a condemnation or a moral judgement, but a movement in a larger process of healing and restoration. When sickness is viewed positively and in supportive terms, then illness has a much better chance to heal, with the concomitant result that the entire person may grow and be enriched in the process." --Ken Wilber

Quote of the Day
"...Death is part of life; there is nothing strange about it; sooner or later we all have to pass through that gate. At that time, whether or not there is a after life, it is very valuable to have peace of mind. How can we achieve peace of mind at such a moment? It is possible only if we have some experience of ourselves that will provide inner strength, because no one can provide this for us--no deities, no gurus, and no friends. This is why the Buddha says you must be your own master." --His Holiness the Dalai Lama

Quote of the Day
"We think that by protecting ourselves from suffering that we are being kind to ourselves. The truth is, we only become more fearful, more hardened, and more alienated. We experience ourselves as being separate from the whole. This separateness becomes like a prison for us, a prison that restricts us to our personal hopes and fears and to caring only for the people nearest to us. Curiously enough, if we primarily try to shield ourselves from discomfort, we suffer. Yet when we don't close off and we let our hearts break, we discover our kinship with all beings. His Holiness the Dalai Lama describes two kinds of selfish people: the unwise and the wise. Unwise selfish people think only of themselves, and the result is confusion and pain. Wise selfish people know that the best thing they can do for themselves is to be there for others. As a result, they experience joy."

"The greatest obstacle to connecting with our joy is resentment."

"Resentment, bitterness, holding a grudge prevent us from seeing and hearing and tasting and delighting."

"Thich Nhat Hanh, in his Guide to Walking Meditation, begins by talking about how everyone carries around this burden, and if you want to put it off, if you want to lay it down, you can do it. You can connect with the joy in your heart."

"Acknowledging the preciousness of each day is a good way to live, a good way to reconnect with our basic joy."

Original 16" x 20" x 0.75" painting
Golden, Liquitex, and Chroma acrylics on gallery-wrapped canvas

Today's work includes a new edition of Young America Road, a popular composition and one that I started with over six years ago when I began to paint as my day job. Still Life with Blue Vase is a composition that has also done well in the past. Both are a joy to paint.

Quote of the Day
"To relate to others compassionately is a challenge. Really communicating to the heart and being there for someone else--our child, spouse, parent, client, patient, or the homeless woman on the street--means not shutting down on that person, first of all, not shutting down on ourselves. This means allowing ourselves to feel what we feel and not pushing it away. It means accepting every aspect of ourselves, even the parts we don't like.

To do this requires openness, which in Buddhism is sometimes called emptiness--not fixating or holding on to anything. Only in an open, nonjudgmental space can we acknowledge what we are feeling. Only in an open space where we're not all caught up in our own version of reality can we see and hear and feel who others really are, which allows us to be with them and communicate with them properly." --Pema Chodron
